“Sanj …. Which dress looks nice? It’s on sale and it’s like 70% off !” , my best friend and roommate asked . To be honest , until then I had never really shopped online . I mean , I lived in a place which had the biggest malls in the world. I never had the need to go online shopping . But since I came to India , I realized it’s not about just clothes , it’s everything . From jobs to old books , you can find literally everything on the internet . And sometimes , if we get lucky we even get it for a discount that we’d never get in an actual store .
Myntra and Flipkart are some popular brands in India . But US is already up-ed their game when it comes to monetizing sites and apps . Look at a site like Craigslist for example . Craigslist provides local classifieds and forums for jobs, housing, for sale, personals, services, local communities in the US . So far India hasn’t come up with a site that is this well-known .
There are many factors for the popularity of such sites and apps . Firstly India is very urban , but people cannot go to malls regularly , simply because the travel gets tedious and there simply isn’t enough time in this fast paced country . And add that to the fact that India has one of the best IT sectors the world . Young Indian minds have recognized how lucrative monetizing apps can be and have jumped in head first and created such brilliant places that now people of all ages can enjoy .
So who knows..? We might not have a popular version of Craigslist yet , but I’m sure some bright mind is working on it right now and will probably make it better and much more innovative than Craiglist will ever be .
